9/14/2023 0 Comments Colossal caves![]() But if anything I've said twangs a chord of interest in you, maybe that's enough. Clearly, the game won't be for everybody. And once you settle into that rhythm, there is a nostalgic pleasure in it.Ĭan I recommend it? I don't know if I can, and I haven't played anywhere near enough for this to be a review. Try things and then try again: it's the old-school way. There are just clues scattered around, maps, and your mind. It's your first impression, and, well, blow the image up and see what you think.īut I also find it fascinating, because which other game today will trap you in a maze and offer no explanation of what you have to do to get out? There's nothing here, no conciliation to any of the hand-holding we've come to expect in games. That house in the bottom-right is the first thing you see before you go spelunking. When you put it next to a game like Edith Finch, there's no comparison. Colossal Cave 3D looks old, moves old, behaves old. Even the graphics, which are new, look that dated. Not in the sense they've created the kind of game we expect in 2023, but because they've created something that feels like it comes from the '90s. Perhaps they can come back and pick up where they'd left off. The brazenness! But that's them - that's the spirit that made them so successful with Sierra On-Line. The prospect of her returning to adventure games, then, was exciting to me.īut how could she make a modern adventure game if she hadn't played one for 25 years - wouldn't her designs be incredibly out of date? What worried me more was hearing the Williams say they weren't aware of anything made in those intervening years that they felt intimidated by - they still thought they could do better. I know all of this because I did a podcast with Ken and Roberta recently, and what really stood out was talking to Roberta and hearing about how fearless she'd been in the face of a very male-orientated industry, and in an industry where so much of what she wanted to do, hadn't been done. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. And that game, you've probably guessed it, is this one, Colossal Cave 3D. And one day, she couldn't take it any more, and was lured into making sure it was done properly, which meant her taking over the project and game. Then, though, came lockdown, and it was in lockdown that Ken got bored and started tinkering around making a game, and Roberta couldn't help but see it over his shoulder. They got into boating instead and became explorers. They didn't even so much as pick up a game in the decades since. And then, maybe because of it, Ken and Roberta completely walked away from games - and I do mean completely. Ken was super-stressed so Roberta convinced him to back out of the company, and a buyout was followed by fraud investigations - nothing to do with the Williams - and the whole thing collapsed. ![]() And it all began for them with Colossal Cave - Roberta played it and never looked back. Ken ran the business, Roberta made the games. ![]() It revolves around Ken and Roberta Williams, who created Sierra On-Line back in the 80s and were the OG video game mega-company before the familiar names of today came along. Do you see what I mean?īut there's a good reason for this! There's a whole backstory to the game you have to know about. It's as though Colossal Cave, for all it wants to be new, can't shake off the past. ![]() It's like seeing the kind of 3D world we know so well these days but being held back from exploring it with the fluidity we're used to. There's no jumping, no crouching, and the game locks you in place when you encounter someone while they run through a short animation of some kind. You can't even open a door until you switch to the hand icon and 'use' it, and the same is true of ladders. There's an inventory and you use things on other things. Colossal Cave behaves like a stop-start kind of adventure game, a point-and-click. ![]() "You are in a large cave," for instance.īut there's also something about the way it works. So as you walk around the new 3D world, an eye icon and narrator also give you the old cues you no longer really need. Also apparently coming to Meta Quest 2, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch but I can't see any sign of it on those storefronts there yetĮxcept, the text guidance is still here too, only it's now narrated. Availability: Releases later today - 19th Jan - on PC ( Steam). The caves you once explored in your imagination are now rendered around you. Here's a game that originally came out in 1976, and was played entirely in text - printed on paper, in some cases - and it's been remade in 3D. I don't know whether to be turned off by the new Colossal Cave or charmed by it. ![]() ![]() ![]() providing opportunities for students to work collaboratively in partnerships, and to share and justify their ideas in small groups, and with the whole class.providing teacher support with the drawing of tessellations.directly modelling examples of tessellations and transformations.asking students to justify why they believe tessellating patterns occur.providing physical manipulatives, regular polygons, or online tools (many are available), so that students can experiments with the tessellation and transformation of different shapes. The learning opportunities in this unit can be differentiated by providing or removing support to students and by varying the task requirements. The idea of this unit is for students to develop their understanding of the mathematical concepts that underlie the creation of Escher type tessellations and apply this to the creation of an art piece. You might use the ideas from Measuring Angles, Level 3 for this purpose. Note that this unit does not include explicit teaching around angles, although this could be included as an additional point of learning. Either the corners of the basic shape all fit together to make 360°, or the corners of some basic shapes fit together along the side of another to again make 360°. This requires the vertices to fit together. The same figure (or group of figures) come together to completely cover a wall or floor or some other plane. The key features of tessellations are that there are no gaps or overlaps. These tessellations provide a strong structure for their two different purposes. The brick wall provides a tessellation with rectangles and the honeycomb is a tessellation of regular hexagons. Bees use a basic hexagonal shape to manufacture their honeycombs. Brick walls are made of the same shaped brick repeatedly laid in rows. They also provide a nice application of some of the basic properties of polygons. Tessellations are a neat and symmetric form of decoration. Occasionally you can see them in the living room as the basis of the pattern on carpets and in parquetry wooden floors. Tessellations are found all over the place but especially in the kitchen and bathroom on tiles and lino. Can you guess how many times a tile would rotate, if each turn were 60 degrees? 45 degrees? 30 degrees? 20 degrees? 15 degrees? Hint: 360 is an important number in geometry. The unit of work is based on the work of the Dutch artist Escher who utilised mathematical concepts, including tessellation, to create mathematically pieces of artwork. In other rotational tessellations the tile- the basic repeating shape- might rotate 90 degrees four times, and so on. In other rotational tessellations, like the second example at left, a tile might turn 180 degrees, and do it only once. Those pairs of goldfish are turning around their tummies. In the first example at right, the golfish turns 120 degrees, then does it again, to make three fish in each cluster. We make this tessellation by copying the fish shape and then turning it a little around a point.in this case, where three fishies' back-fins meet. ![]() This is the basic "tile" shape of the first goldfish tessellation on this page: it's a goldfish. Zola was convicted of libel for this letter and fled to England to avoid going to jail. A coverupĮmile Zola (Musée de Bretagne, Collection Arts graphiques)Īt this point, Émile Zola, perhaps the most famous writer in France at the time, wrote an open letter to the French President titled J’Accuse…! Published on the front page of the newspaper L’Aurore, this massively important and courageous letter accused the French Army of framing an innocent man based on antisemitism, named the specific individuals responsible for the crime and coverup, and demanded that the Dreyfus case by reopened. In other words, political, cultural and institutional factors were now far more important than the facts related to who actually betrayed French military secrets to the Germans. Plus, in a time of surging antisemitism on the French Right, Dreyfus was a most convenient scapegoat. The French Army was now all in on the Big Lie of Dreyfus’ guilt, because the Army’s reputation was believed to be at stake. These supposed crimes were fabrications based on obviously forged documents. “The French Army was now all in on the Big Lie of Dreyfus’ guilt, because the Army’s reputation was believed to be at stake.” High officials in the French Army hid the evidence so that Esterhazy was acquitted indeed, the Army charged Dreyfus with more crimes. The real culprit was a non-Jewish major named Esterhazy. Two years later, a counter-espionage investigation revealed that Dreyfus had been framed. After his conviction and the public humiliation of being physically stripped of his military rank, he was sent to Devil’s Island. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and exile. The Dreyfus affair ( l’affaire Dreyfus) began in 1894 when a 35-year-old French Army captain named Alfred Dreyfus, an officer of Jewish descent, was wrongly convicted of treason for purportedly passing French military secrets to the German Embassy in Paris. Permit me to take you back to late 19th and early 20th century France. The single best historical comparison I currently can locate to the embrace of Trump’s Big Lie, all evidence to the contrary, is the Dreyfus Affair in France. It is almost comforting - almost, I say - to see that the forces distorting the politics of the good old USA in this period have been seen before in other lands. In working on that book, I am digging around in various countries and various eras, all of which had in common authoritarian, anti-democratic and reactionary movements that garnered strong Christian support. I am writing a book called Defending Democracy from its Christian Enemies. “This means that while the nonexistent factual basis for the Big Lie shrinks even further, the movement embracing that lie grows.” Late 19-century France What kind of country - what kind of politics - what kind of person are we dealing with for this to be where we are? This very disturbing reality needs not just to be protested, but to be analyzed. This means that while the nonexistent factual basis for the Big Lie shrinks even further, the movement embracing that lie grows. In Washington, the January 6 Committee, primarily using testimony from Republicans and former Trump administration officials, is once again shredding Donald Trump’s Big Lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him, meanwhile revealing the extent and damage of Trump’s desperate, likely criminal attempt to hold onto power.Īt the same time, “election-denier” candidates are advancing in GOP primaries in many states, and the Republican Party of Texas just embraced election denial and called Joe Biden “acting president.” We are witnessing an extraordinarily disturbing juxtaposition in U.S. ![]() 9/14/2023 0 Comments Turbotax desktop version![]() ![]() You can buy the TurboTax Business software for $190 with this deal. Pablo Picasso (/pɪˈkɑːsoʊ, -ˈkæsoʊ/ Spanish: 25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright who spent most of his adult life in France. Picasso created some of the greatest 20th century paintings, several of which have achieved iconic status ( Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, Guernica, Weeping Woman). The Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) has been called "the house that Pablo built," because it has so widely exhibited the artist's work. His work in pioneering Cubism established a set of pictorial problems, devices, and approaches, which remained important well into the 1950s. Picasso's influence was profound and far-reaching for most of his life. As he matured he worked on his own versions of canonical masterpieces by artists such as Poussin, Ingres, Velazquez, Goya, Rembrandt, and El Greco. In the 1920s and 1930s Picasso adopted a neoclassical figurative style. At the same time, Picasso himself rejected the label "Cubism," especially when critics began to differentiate between the two key approaches he pursued - Analytic and Synthetic. This led him (alongside with Georges Braque) to evolve an entirely new Cubist movement, which rapidly became the cutting edge of modern art. Influenced by novelties of Cézanne, and also by African sculpture and ancient Iberian art, he started to lend his figures more structure, and to deconstruct the conventions of perspective that had dominated painting since the Renaissance. Picasso rejected Matisse's view of the primary importance and role of colour, and focused instead on new pictorial ways of representing form and space. His many relationships with women not only filtered into his art but also may have directed its course, and his behavior has come to embody that of the bohemian modern artist in the popular imagination. Finally, he was a famously charismatic personality, the leading figure in the Ecole de Paris. He saw himself above all as a painter, yet his sculpture was greatly influential, and he also explored areas as diverse as printmaking and ceramics.
